SECOND GRADE DAY AT THE BAY

Have you met Bel yet? Meet her here!

Explore tidepools and estuaries and learn how animals use adaptations to survive in different ecosystems.

The videos and activities were designed for 2nd-grade students in Tillamook County, Oregon, but many are also great for anyone that wants to learn more about the local area or classes from other areas interested in exploring this region.

FIELD TRIP OPPORTUNITIES

If you are a local Tillamook County School, contact Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS (director@netartsbaywebs.org) for more information about field trip opportunities to explore the local biomes around Netarts Bay.

2nd Grade Day at the Bay: Explore Netarts Bay and Oceanside Tidepools

During this field trip, students investigate tidepool and bay habitats to compare how animals use adaptations to survive in different ecosystems. Students rotate through different discovery activities at the tidepools and along the beach at Netarts Bay, practice their engineering skills building sandcastles, search for shore crabs, and catch different types of shrimp.

OREGON FIELD GUIDE: See what this field trip is all about in this episode of Oregon Field Guide in 2016.

The field trip is designed for 2nd-grade students but we have accommodated other grades in the past.

ADDITIONAL LEARNING RESOURCES:

Below you will find content created specifically for this program. These videos and activities can be used on their own or to supplement the learning taking place during or after the field trip. They are even fun for adults! Share these with your class, your children, or enjoy them on your own.

Virtual Learning Videos:

With the help of our bi-lingual friend, Bel the Belted Kingfisher, and members of the Tillamook County STEAM Partnership, students can explore and learn about Netarts Bay and compare this habitat to the tidepools at Oceanside. While these resources are designed to help youth learn about this amazing place, they are great for learners of all ages!

Day At The Beach:

Part of the 2nd Grade Day at the Bay Program

Take a deep dive into the intertidal zone and learn what tide pools are and how to safely explore them. We’ll take a closer look at the different zones or habitats in a tide pool, the animals that call those habitats home, and the special adaptations they have made to live there.

Meet your Bay-Netarts:

Come along with Bel the Belted Kingfisher and learn a little about Netarts Bay, then compare this ecosystem to the tidepools from the video “Day at the Beach”. Fed by only small streams, this salty Oregon bay holds a shellfish reserve (protected area) and provides a safe home to many different animals. Learn more about Netarts Bay with Bel!

VIDEO COMING SOON

2020 Virtual Field Trip:

Watch the 2020 virtual field trip for South Prairie Elementary, presented by Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS and Tillamook County STEM partners as part of an online learning opportunity

School or Home Learning Activities:

Classroom or at-home activities compliment the field trip and video resources above and can be done in the classroom, as part of a virtual learning program, a pre or post-field trip activity, or as a fun enrichment activity:

Bays and Tidepools:

This writing activity encourages students to compare Netarts Bay to the tidepools at Oceanside Beach. The goal is to encourage the students to share how these places are different and how animals can survive there.

Bays and Tidepools Activities

This program was created in partnership with Tillamook School District #9 (TSD9) under the leadership of retired educator Clair Thomas. The Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS continues to sponsor these field trips in partnership with Tillamook School District #9 and Natural Resource Coordinator Amy Schmid. Opportunities may be available for other schools and classes to take part in this program. Please contact Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS (director@netartsbaywebs.org) if you are interested in learning more.
