Learn about global biomes by investigating local forest and marine habitats around Netarts Bay. Fun field trips and virtual content specific to the Oregon Coast will help you learn about biomes, the factors that create different global biomes, and discover the biomes in and near Tillamook.


The videos and activities were designed for 3rd-grade students in Tillamook County, Oregon, but are also great for anyone that wants to learn more about the local area or class from other areas interested in exploring this region.

Biomes

Explore local biomes near Netarts Bay and learn about other global biomes during this hands-on interactive program. Students will learn about biomes and the important factors that create them. They will explore the coniferous forest biome and marine biome, which meet along the coast of Oregon. Students will discover similarities and differences in weather, climate, unique environmental factor, soil properties, plant diversity, and wildlife by investigating local habitats and comparing them to other global biomes.

 

This field trip is best for 3rd-grade students but we have hosted 2nd – 4th graders.

Virtual Learning Videos:

With the help of our bi-lingual friend, Bel the Belted Kingfisher, students can explore and learn about Netarts Bay and other estuaries and local bays within Tillamook County. Developed as a learning tool for first graders, these videos are great for all ages! 

 

Biomes: 

Learn about BIOMES from around the world by exploring the local habitats in Netarts Bay and the surrounding forests. Join Bel, the Belted Kingfisher, to learn what exactly a biome is, the important factors in creating them, and discover how local habitats compare to larger global biomes.

Backyard Biomes:

Investigate your biome by exploring the habitats in your backyard, nearby natural area or schoolyard with these tips from Bel, the Belted Kingfisher. 

School or Home Learning Activities:

Classroom or at-home activities compliment the field trip and video resources above and can be done in the classroom, as part of a virtual learning program, a pre or post-field trip activity, or as a fun enrichment activity:

This program was created in partnership with Tillamook School District #9 (TSD9) under the leadership of retired educator Clair Thomas. The Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS continues to sponsor these field trips in partnership with Tillamook School District #9 and Natural Resource Coordinator Amy Schmid. Opportunities may be available for other schools and classes to take part in this program.
