COASTAL GEOLOGY & ENERGY • 4th GRADE

Have you met Bel yet? Meet her here!

Explore energy and how it moves, then look closer at the forces that shaped the Oregon Coast.

The videos and activities were designed for 4th-grade students in Tillamook County, Oregon, but are also great for anyone that wants to learn more about the local area or class from other areas interested in exploring this region.

FIELD TRIP OPPORTUNITIES

If you are a local Tillamook County School, contact Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS (director@netartsbaywebs.org) for more information about field trip opportunities to explore the local biomes around Netarts Bay.

Coastal Geology & Energy Field Trip

Coastal headlands of Cape Lookout and Netarts Spit are the backdrop for this fun field trip. Students examine unique geologic features through activities on sedimentary and igneous rock formations and spit and bay geomorphology. Students also have an opportunity to explore energy topics, including kinetic and potential energy, wave energy, and wind energy.

This field trip is best for 4th grade but we have hosted 4th – 6th graders.

ADDITIONAL LEARNING RESOURCES:

Below you will find content created specifically for this program. These videos and activities can be used on their own or to supplement the learning taking place during or after the field trip. They are even fun for adults! Share these with your class, your children, or enjoy them on your own.

Virtual Learning Videos:

Learn about BIOMES from around the world by exploring the local habitats in Netarts Bay and the surrounding forests. Join Bel, the Belted Kingfisher, to learn what exactly a biome is, the important factors in creating them, and discover how local habitats compare to larger global biomes.

With the help of our bi-lingual friend, Bel the Belted Kingfisher, students can explore and learn about Netarts Bay and other estuaries and local bays within Tillamook County. Developed as a learning tool for first graders, these videos are great for all ages!

Processes that formed our Coast:

Do you know what forces and processes helped shape the North Oregon Coast? Bel the Belted Kingfisher will take you on a tour of Tillamook County’s headlands, beaches, and spits from Cape Falcon to Cape Lookout and Cape Kiwanda. Learn with her as she discusses energy, the rock cycle, and the forces that change these unique coastal regions.

Geology and Energy:

There are lots of different types of rocks and they form in different ways. Educator Clair Thomas will introduce you to a few different rocks and talk about the energy needed to create the rocks and how they formed.

Matter and Energy:

Get an introduction on matter and energy. What are the states of matter? How is energy created and changed? Educator Clair Thomas will walk you through the basics.

School or Home Learning Activities:

Classroom or at-home activities compliment the field trip and video resources above and can be done in the classroom, as part of a virtual learning program, a pre or post field trip activity, or as a fun enrichment activity:

What kind of Rocks are under your Home or School?

Have you ever wondered what kind of rock is under the place where you live? How about your friends or classmates? How about your school? Let’s do a little investigating and find out! This activity is designed for use in communities around Netarts and Tillamook Bay.

Rocks Under Home/School

This program was created in partnership with Tillamook School District #9 (TSD9) under the leadership of retired educator Clair Thomas. The Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS continues to sponsor these field trips in partnership with Tillamook School District #9 and Natural Resource Coordinator Amy Schmid. Opportunities may be available for other schools and classes to take part in this program. Please contact Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS (director@netartsbaywebs.org) if you are interested in learning more.
